How to Set Up Your Greenly Grove Hydroponic Tower
Before I launched Greenly Grove, I tested this system myself — set it up in my own space, grew in it, and made sure it actually worked the way it was supposed to. One of the things that stood out immediately was how straightforward the setup was. No tools, no complicated instructions, no prior growing experience needed.
Here's exactly how to go from unboxing to your first seeds planted — start to finish.
What You'll Need
Everything comes in the box:
— Tower body and layers
— Water reservoir base
— Low-voltage recirculating pump with timer
— Germination tray and humidity dome
— Bamboo-fiber grow sponges
— Extra net pots
The only things you need to source separately are water, hydroponic nutrients, and your choice of seeds.
Step 1: Assemble the Tower (5 minutes)
Stack the tower layers onto the reservoir base, starting from the bottom and working up. Each layer fits into the one below it — there's really only one way they connect, so it's difficult to get wrong. Once all layers are stacked, assembly is done.
Find a good spot on the floor before you fill it — the reservoir holds up to 5 gallons of water, so it's easier to position it empty. A kitchen corner, against a wall in a living area, or a dedicated growing space all work well.
Step 2: Fill the Reservoir and Add Nutrients (3 minutes)
Fill the reservoir with clean water. Tap water works fine for most areas — if yours is heavily chlorinated, let it sit uncovered for 24 hours first, or use filtered water.
Add your hydroponic nutrients according to the mixing instructions on the bottle. For your first fill, start at the lower end of the recommended dosage. You can adjust as you learn how your plants respond.
Step 3: Run the Pump (2 minutes)
Plug in the pump and let it run for a few minutes to confirm water is circulating properly through all levels. You should see water flowing through each layer and returning to the reservoir. If anything looks off, check that all layers are fully seated.
The pump runs on a timer — set it once and it cycles automatically from there.
Step 4: Germinate Your Seeds (3–7 days)
Take a grow sponge and moisten it — damp, not soaking. Place 2–3 seeds into the center hole, just at the surface. Don't push them deep. Set the sponge in the germination tray, cover with the humidity dome, and place somewhere warm — ideally 65–75°F.
Check daily. Most seeds sprout within 3–7 days. Not every seed will germinate and that's completely normal — it's why we include extras.
Step 5: Transfer Seedlings to the Tower (day 10–14)
Once your seedlings have a visible root emerging from the bottom of the sponge and at least one set of true leaves, they're ready to move. Drop each sponge into a net pot and set it into one of the growing ports. The system takes over from here.
A Few Things I'd Tell Anyone Getting Started
— Light matters more than most people expect. If your space doesn't get strong natural light, a grow light makes a significant difference in both growth speed and plant health. Don't underestimate this one.
— Start with herbs and leafy greens for your first grow. They're forgiving, fast, and give you quick feedback on whether your setup is dialed in.
— Don't overthink the nutrients. Follow the instructions, start light, and adjust if plants look pale or slow-growing.
Most people are harvesting their first greens within 4–6 weeks of planting. It goes faster than you'd expect.
