About Hydroponic Growing

What is a vertical hydroponic tower system?

A vertical hydroponic tower system is a soil-free indoor garden that grows plants in stacked layers using nutrient-rich water. Instead of soil, plant roots sit in net pots and receive a continuous flow of water mixed with nutrients. Plants grow faster than in soil, use up to 95% less water, and can be grown year-round indoors — regardless of season or outdoor space.

Is hydroponic growing better than soil?

For indoor home growing, hydroponics offers significant advantages over soil. There are no pests, no mess, and no weather dependency. Most hydroponic plants grow 30–50% faster than soil-grown counterparts because nutrients are delivered directly to the roots. For busy people in smaller spaces, hydroponics is far more practical and consistent than traditional gardening.

What can you grow in a vertical hydroponic tower?

Vertical hydroponic towers work best with:
  • Leafy greens — lettuce, spinach, kale, arugula, Swiss chard
  • Herbs — basil, cilantro, parsley, mint, dill, chives
  • Smaller fruiting plants — strawberries, peppers (with adequate lighting)
Most leafy greens and herbs are ready to harvest within 3–5 weeks.

What is the best hydroponic tower for beginners?

The Greenly Grove Standard Grow System (7 Layer) is our most popular choice for beginners — it balances growing capacity with simplicity. For tighter spaces, the 5-Layer Compact System is ideal. For maximum output, the 9-Layer Tall System grows the most plants. All three systems include everything you need to get started.

How much does it cost to run a hydroponic tower at home?

Running costs are minimal. The low-voltage pump uses less electricity than a nightlight, and a bottle of hydroponic nutrients lasts several months. Most people spend less than $5–10 per month on ongoing supplies after the initial system purchase — far less than what they save on fresh herbs and greens at the grocery store.

Do I need any experience to use a hydroponic tower?

No experience is required. The Greenly Grove system is designed specifically for beginners. If you can care for a houseplant, you can grow with Greenly Grove. Every system ships with detailed setup instructions, and our US-based support team is available if you need help at any stage.

Seeds & Germination

How do I germinate seeds for a hydroponic tower?

Place 2–3 seeds into a pre-moistened grow sponge, then set it into the germination tray included with your system. Cover with the humidity dome to retain moisture and warmth. Keep in a warm spot (65–75°F is ideal) and check daily. Most seeds will sprout within 3–7 days. Once seedlings have a visible root and 1–2 small leaves, they're ready to transfer into the tower.

Why didn't my seeds germinate?

Not all seeds germinate — this is completely normal. Common reasons include:
  • Grow sponge too wet or too dry (damp, not soaking)
  • Temperature too cold — seeds germinate best above 65°F
  • Seeds planted too deep — sit just at the surface of the sponge
  • Old or low-viability seeds
This is why every Greenly Grove system includes extra grow sponges.

How long does germination take?

Most herb and leafy green seeds germinate within 3–7 days. Lettuce and arugula often sprout within 3–4 days. Slower varieties like parsley can take up to 10–14 days. Warmth and consistent moisture are the two biggest factors in germination speed.

When should I transfer seedlings into the tower?

Transfer seedlings once they have a visible root emerging from the bottom of the grow sponge and at least one set of true leaves. This typically happens 7–14 days after germination. Transferring too early can stress the seedling — patience here leads to stronger plants.

Do Greenly Grove seeds come included with the tower?

Seeds are not included with the tower system, but Greenly Grove offers a full selection of non-GMO seeds specifically chosen for hydroponic tower growing — including herbs, lettuces, greens, and more. All seed varieties are tested for compatibility with vertical hydroponic systems.

Lighting

Do hydroponic towers need grow lights?

Not necessarily — if your tower receives 6+ hours of bright, indirect sunlight daily, many herbs and leafy greens will grow well without supplemental lighting. However, most indoor spaces don't provide consistent enough light year-round. A grow light ensures reliable, fast growth regardless of season, window placement, or weather.

What kind of grow light do I need for a vertical tower?

Vertical towers perform best with lighting that reaches plants throughout the entire growing column. Greenly Grove Tower Lights are designed specifically for our systems, mounting directly to the tower to provide consistent coverage while maintaining a clean, space-saving setup. They’re ideal for indoor growing areas with limited natural sunlight.

How many hours of light do hydroponic plants need per day?

Most leafy greens and herbs thrive with 14–16 hours of light per day. Use a simple outlet timer to automate this. Avoid running lights 24 hours — plants need a dark period to rest and grow properly.

Why are my plants leggy or stretching toward the light?

Leggy, stretched plants are a sign they're not getting enough light. Fix this by:
  • Moving the tower closer to a window
  • Adding or upgrading your grow light
  • Increasing light hours to 14–16 per day
  • Making sure nothing blocks light from reaching lower tower levels

Nutrients & Water

What nutrients do hydroponic plants need?

Hydroponic plants need nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), plus trace minerals like calcium, magnesium, and iron. The General Hydroponics Flora Series 3-Part System covers all of these in one easy-to-follow formula and is what we recommend for all Greenly Grove systems.

How much nutrient solution do I add to the water?

Follow the mixing instructions on your nutrient bottle. For leafy greens and herbs, aim for an EC of 1.2–2.0. Start at the lower end of the recommended dosage when plants are young, then increase slightly as they mature.

How often do I need to refill the water reservoir?

Typically every 1–2 weeks, depending on the number of plants, their size, and your environment. As plants grow larger they'll drink more. Always add fresh nutrient solution when topping up — not plain water alone — to maintain the right nutrient balance.

What is the ideal pH for a hydroponic tower?

The ideal pH range for most hydroponic herbs and leafy greens is 5.5–6.5, with 6.0 being the sweet spot. pH outside this range prevents plants from absorbing nutrients properly. Test with an inexpensive pH kit or digital meter, and adjust with pH Up or pH Down solution.

Can I use tap water in my hydroponic tower?

Yes — most tap water works fine. If your tap water is heavily chlorinated, let it sit uncovered for 24 hours before use to allow the chlorine to dissipate. Filtered or distilled water works well if tap water is a concern in your area.

System & Maintenance

Does the pump run continuously?

The system uses a timed water cycle to circulate nutrients efficiently to all plants. The pump is designed for continuous indoor use and runs quietly in the background.

How do I clean my hydroponic tower?

Between growing cycles, do a thorough clean:
  • Empty and rinse the reservoir completely
  • Wipe tower sections with diluted hydrogen peroxide (3%) to prevent algae and bacteria
  • Rinse all parts thoroughly with clean water before refilling
  • Replace grow sponges with each new planting cycle

Why are my plants growing slowly?

Slow growth is almost always caused by one of three things:
  • Light — not enough hours or intensity. Aim for 14–16 hours daily.
  • Nutrients — solution too diluted, or pH out of range preventing absorption.
  • Temperature — plants grow best between 65–75°F. Cold rooms slow growth significantly.

Can I expand my tower later?

Yes. Greenly Grove's modular expansion components allow you to add growing layers to your existing system over time. Start with the system that fits your space and scale up as your confidence grows.

Can I move the tower once plants are growing?

Yes, but move carefully to avoid spilling water or disturbing roots. It's best to plan your placement before planting and minimize moves once plants are established.
